A Light Show of 1,374 Drones over the Xi’an City Wall Creates a Guinness World Record

On the night of May 1st, the “Red May—Xi’an City Wall International Cultural Festival” kicked off at the South Gate square. The Light Show of a Thousand Drones over the Xi’an City Wall with the theme of “Spring Dance in Great Xi’an” unveiled the grand opening of the festival. Through deep integration of “hard technology + the ancient city wall” and with the creative concept of “the door to openness and history”, it presents a marvelous light and shadow feast that combines lighting technology, modern arts, the culture of the ancient city and the capital of hard science and technology, creating a space-crossing symphony of Chinese and foreign cultures.

At around 20:30, the opening show “Space-Time Light Show” began. Performing artists went on the stage to present wonderful performances: “Meeting the Spring”, “Goodbye to You”, “Spring·Dance”, “Defend the Yellow River”, “Silk Road”, “Show You the City of Chang’an” and “Stay True”. These performances showcased the forceful steps Xi’an has taken in catching up and overtaken its rivals, played out the glories and dreams of this new era, expressed the beautiful wishes to the future of China, and brought citizens and visitors with surprises and touches from the “new look of an ancient city”.

At about 21:10, 1,374 drones took off from the South Gate of the Xi’an City Wall, and flied up to the sky into different formations featured by Chinese characters, Shaanxi culture and Xi’an factors. They formed into Chinese characters such as “西安最中国” (Xi’an—the most cultured and traditional city in China), “奔跑吧西安” (Running Xi’an), “新时代” (New Era), “四十周年” (the 40th Anniversary), images such as the Bell Tower, the Dayan Pagoda, camels on the Silk Road, the Xi’an city flower pomegranate as well as patterns such as “5.1”, “1374”and “I ❤ XI’AN”. The number 1,374 means that in 2013 China proposed the Belt and Road Initiative and so far there are 74 countries and organizations signed on; it also represents the length of the Xi’an City Wall, the best preserved wall that has the longest history and extends 13.74 kilometers. Together with the light, shadow and music, the show presented a stunning effects to the audience. The drone show broke the Guinness World Record as “the largest number of unmanned aerial vehicles flying simultaneously”, was there and then proved and certificated by the Guinness World Records after the show.

It was reported that this event was directed by the same design team that also designed the “Beijing 8-Minute Show” at the closing ceremony of the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.
